Pragati Maidan is an acknowledged ground in New Delhi, where exhibitions and large conventions are held. With an area of 72,000 sq meters, this place is presently known for hosting city’s largest exhibitions. Managed and owned by ITPO (Indian Trade Promotion Organization), a well known trade promotion agency of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, this maidan is no doubt a popular exhibition center.
Established in 1982 on an area of 150 acres, this maidan overlooks the ancient Purana Qila, which is opposite the Gate number one. Pragati Maidan is bordered by the Bhairon and Mathura Road on each side. This maidan is located in Central Delhi where it shares the same pin code of 110001 like that of Sansad Bhavan and Janpath. This maidan offers nearly 61,290 sq meter of road which covers the exhibition space. It has 16 halls, together with 10,000 sq meter of area which is open for display. The complex features 18 exhibition halls, many buildings, food centers, performance space together with compound and a headquarter of ITPO. This maidan hosts nearly seventy national and international exhibitions every year of which India International Trade Fair is the biggest one, attracting 30, 00, 000 visitors and 10,000 exhibitors. Pragati Maidan hosts five permanent exhibitions that include – Atomic Energy and Defense Pavilion and Nehru Pavilion. Some other events which are held in this maidan are World Book Fair, the well known Auto Expo, and the India International Trade Fair.
In the year 2006, in advance of the Commonwealth Games of 2010, an amount of INR 1260 crore for the development plan was passed by the Indian government. Apart from this, Pragati Maidan also houses a contemporary convention center which is expected to be 5-8 times bigger than the Vigyan Bhawan.
